Rite of Passage for the deceased

When our loved ones pass away, we can help them have a smooth transition, to help them on their way.
If they passed away months, years or even decades ago,
we can still help them and give assistance.

Just as we do our best to give a traditional funeral send off, in the physical sense, for the physical body, we should also take care of the spiritual transition of the soul.

A Dharma Rite, known as Assisting the Deceased, is to help them with their burdens and obstacles they faced whilst living,  that they will continue to carry into their next life.

Each candle represents a mother, father, grandfather and grandmother. Each candle burns for 7 days.
During the 7 day Rite of Passage for the soul of the deceased.
In Buddhism and many schools of Yoga, the understanding is the continuum of life, in other words life, death and rebirth.
By having a Rite for the deceased, the benefits are to cleanse their karmas so the next birth is more fortunate without endless struggles. The other benefits are that what may have been passed down, inheritance from your parents, grandparents etc ( in terms of bloodline obstacles, sickness etc) is also cleansed and pacified in this service.
The Temple service calls in the power of the Buddhas
through a chanting prayer ritual, lasting 7 days.

This is a spiritual process not a religious one.

To do a service for another is to do a service for your own heart
